It is no secret that in the past 10 years, the wide acceptance of alternative options for working out and overall fitness have increased exponentially and many disciplines that were thought off as being obscure or simply not for the regular folk, are now being very well accepted and offered in virtually any corner of any particular city.
We are talking specifically about Pilates and Yoga. But for some reason, people have erroneous notions about these two disciplines. People associate yoga with tree hugging hippies that are interested in chanting, meditation and eating a vegan diet. People also associate Pilates with women who want to have a flat stomach or a routine for house wives who are bored.
Both assumptions couldn’t be further from the truth!
The fact of the matter is that both yoga and Pilates have an amazing variety of health benefits and the routine practice of both can lead to amazing results in your health and overall fitness levels. Yoga is, without a doubt the fountain of youth. It is an amazing discipline with an endless list of health benefits such as stress relief, injury prevention, mobility, etc. It accepts both the granola, tree hugging hippies, as well as the successful entrepreneur from Wall Street.
Pilates is just as beneficial and fortunately, being more available these days. Pilates was designed for ballet dancers and to help them deal with the rigors of their craft and the demand placed on their bodies. Researchers have found the benefits associated with having a strong core in every day activities and have shown that those who practice Pilates on a regular basis, are less prone to injury, have better posture and perform better on their daily tasks.
The downside to both of these disciplines, is that they have been made available to those with higher economic wealth. In other words, both yoga and pilates classes are really expensive. This means, that unless you can score a great deal on Groupon or Living Social, you may be SOL!
But, do not despair. If you would like to practice and enjoy the health benefits of this routine, you should look into the piyo workout. A combo of pilates and yoga offered by Chalene Johnson and Team Beachbody. Check out this Piyo review at mysymfitness.com
And for those of you who are just getting started with your fitness, the new workout by Tony Horton called P90 workouts, it could be a great gateway into a more demanding routines such as Insanity, P90X, Cross fit or others.
I like recommending these workouts because you can do them at home, at your own time and without the hassle of going to a gym. Because let’s face it; the reason why lots of people avoid exercise is because when you are out of shape, going to a gym and be surrounded by fitter people can be pretty daunting.
Working out at home can be fun, flexible and also, way cheaper than paying class dues, parking, time away from home, etc. If going to gyms and attending fitness classes is your thing, then by all means continue to do so. But if you are struggling to find the time to do your everyday routine and also find time for the gym, then let me suggest that you look into workouts for women at home. These could be the difference between being fit and fabulous or staying flabby and unhappy.
